The Brier Creek Chapter, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, held its monthly meeting, Thursday, June 3, at 7 p.m. at the American Legion in Sylvania.
With President Wayne Howard presiding, there were 10 members in attendance. President Howard opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag and, then, asked Wiregrass Chapter President Wilder Smith, Jr. to lead the SAR pledge.
Brier Creek member Grady Jenkins was installed as the Brier Creek Chapter Vice President and new member Gary Hill was inducted into the Brier Creek Chapter.
Recently, the Brier Creek Chapter earned three streamers and President Howard presented them to Sgt-at-Arms Don Bazemore to attach to the club’s chapter colors. Presented were the 2020 Membership streamer for maintaining 90 percent of members for 2021; the 2020 Distinguished Chapter Streamer; and the 2021 Brier Creek Battle Wreath Presentation Streamer.
Compatriot Dr. John Derden was the speaker for the evening. His presentation was on President George Washington's Trip through Georgia in 1791. The president arrived in Georgia for the first and only time in his life and was greeted as a conquering hero. He arrived on May 12, 1791 and his first stop was Mulberry Grove, the plantation of General Nathanael Greene's widow, Catharine. Washington spent four days in Savannah, attending dinners, dances, ceremonies, and services at Christ Church. He traveled north to Waynesboro by way of the old river road and then spent three days in Georgia's capital at Augusta, where he met with Governor Edward Telfair, visited Richmond Academy, and inspected the remains of British fortifications. He mentioned that Waynesboro only had six to eight buildings and when he crossed the Savannah River at Augusta that he crossed over a bridge.
