Artist Terrie Daniel drew praise and admiration during the opening reception of her art exhibition “Impression of Denial” which was held on January 19th at The Kalmanson Gallery of Emanuel Arts Council. Terrie gave an inspiring artist talk during the reception, and answered a number of questions from the guests about her art. She detailed her process with the pieces she had created and talked about the emotional journey behind them.
Her work at the gallery comprises two different mediums—etching and painting. In the “Broken Toys” etching series, Terrie explained that she had collected broken toys over the past 35 years from her various jobs restoring old homes. She said, “Each one of these toys were found in attics, basements, even in backyards.” She equates these damaged toys to the human experience. “We all become perfected and broken in some way, even rejected, and abandoned,” she said. “Just like these toys we can become an image beautiful to relate to despite what others defined us to be.”
In her painting series called “The Things We Don’t See” Terrie said, “As an artist, this was the most powerful work I have accomplished so far. I had to become honest with myself, allow each emotion to be felt in its fullness, no matter how dark or light it was, no matter how painful or joyful.” For example, each piece is titled with a different emotion, such as “Sustainable JOY,” or “Guilt.” She explained that even though we experience emotions every day, “do we see them?” So she said she proceeded to use intense and dramatic colors on canvas to illustrate the many emotions she was experiencing.
Guests were also treated to a lavish reception provided by Chris and Jeannie Morton of Clearwater Solutions of Swainsboro. The event was free and open to the public, and was well-attended by people from Emanuel County and elsewhere.
Terrie Daniel’s exhibition will be on display until February 21st. The Kalmanson Gallery is at 109 North Green Street, Swainsboro, and is open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment.
