Funeral services for Mr. Charlie “Speed” Merrion Sr., 93, were held Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. at Swainsboro City Cemetery with Rev. James E. Love officiating. He departed this life July 27, 2020 after a brief illness.

Brother Charlie “Speed” Merrion Sr. was born in Swainsboro to the late Rev. Lucious Merrion Sr. and the late Lizzie Green Merrion Reynolds on July 26, 1927. A lifelong resident of Emanuel County, Mr. Merrion was a member of Saint Philip Missionary Baptist Church and a life member of Saint Philip Masonic Lodge No. 96. He was preceded in death by his son, Charlie Merrion Jr.

Survivors include a devoted wife of 32 years, Leola J. Merrion of Swainsboro; two daughters, Annette M. (Tommy) James of Canoochee and Pamela L. Flanders of Statesboro; one son, Antony (Emilia) Lawrence of Byron; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Wiggins of Garfield and Margaret Ford of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one brother-in-law, Louis (Barbara) Washington of Swainsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and sorrowing friends.

Mosley’s Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
