A historical Christmas for one Summertown Native

Christmas is the season of joy, light, love and the giving of each. While many homes are being prepped for the holidays with glamorous tree’s, colorful icicle lights and nativity scenes, one local man spends his Decembers enjoying the festive views of the neighborhood from his window. Meet Deacon CB Badie, a resident of Summertown, an avid member of Johnson Grove Baptist Church in Midville, and for the first time ever, owner of a Christmas tree.

When Deacon Badie’s longtime friends, Donnell and Mae Harris, dropped by his home for a visit earlier this month, they noticed that it was missing a touch of sparkle. While sharing conversation and admiring the decorations of the homes nearby, Harris brought up a question that Mr. Badie had never pondered before.

“I love Christmas! So I asked Mr. Badie why he never put up a Christmas tree or any decorations during this time of year,” Harris explained, thinking that it may have something to do with his religion. When she received his reply though, she smiled at the simplicity of the matter. “Deacon Badie likes seeing the beauty of Christmas at other places but he never thought of having that same beauty in his own home.” She then asked if it would be okay for her to put a Christmas tree up for him to enjoy from the warmth of his home for years to come, and with his blessing she gave him the gift of Christmas, providing him with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree while also adding some cheer to his front door with a red and gold wreath.

“Deacon CB Badie, who never had Christmas at his home in all of his 90 plus years is now enjoying it for the very first time. Merry Christmas, Deacon Badie,” Harris joyfully, concluded.
