Sunday, April 5, started out as a warm, sunny day with clear skies. It was a perfect day for a father and son to enjoy a day on the water fishing. Around 10:45 a.m., tragedy struck at a pond in the woods off Mount Olivet Church Road in Garfield. Emanuel County 911 dispatched county EMS, firefighters from Garfield, Swainsboro and Twin City, sheriff’ deputies, along with the coroner’s office, state patrol troopers, and DNR rangers to the pond. Emanuel County Coroner Jeffrey Peebles identified the victim as 56-year-old Larry Joe Cawley of Lyons. The medical examiner has listed the death as an accidental drowning.
