Two individuals were placed under arrest after a stolen vehicle crashed yesterday afternoon.

On the morning of December 2, officers with Swainsboro Police Department received information regarding a stolen vehicle. The victim stated he left his Ford F-150 parked behind Berni’s on West Main during the night and when he returned, the vehicle was no longer there. The responding officer gathered the necessary information and entered the truck into a nationwide lookout.

Later that day at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Canoochee Road and Highway 56. One of the vehicles matched the description of the victim’s stolen F-150. (The other vehicle was an Acura sedan.)

The F-150 was occupied by multiple individuals when officers arrived on scene. One of those individuals fled on foot and was apprehended shortly afterward by SPD officers.

Total, four individuals involved were detained and questioned, and two people were criminally charged. Jamal Brashad Hawkins was charged with theft by taking of an automobile and driving while unlicensed. Also, LaCorea Smith was charged with possession of stolen property.

More charges may be forthcoming as the case remains under investigation by Swainsboro Police Department.
