Margie Kirby Canady Hall, 87 of Nunez, died Friday morning, November 15, 2019 at her home.
Mrs. Margie Kirby Canady Hall was born May 28, 1932, daughter of the late Horace Greely Kirby and Shellie Strange Kirby. She attended Wesley School, transferred to Swainsboro High School, and graduated in the Class of 1949. She was a member of Emanuel County 4-H. She owned and operated Matt’s Mart in Nunez for 36 years and served as mayor of Nunez from 1993 until 2007. Hall was dedicated to her office as mayor and to each resident of Nunez. She was a member of the first class of first responders taught in Emanuel County. She was active in the Nunez Fire Department and was a member of the Emanuel County Rural Firefighters. Hall was a member and past president of the Swainsboro Lions Club and was a board member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes’ Herrington Homestead. She also served on the board of East Georgia Healthcare. Hall raised her children, attending Nunez Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school and served with the WMU. Later, she joined and was an active member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church. Hall was a charter member of United Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, George W. Canady Jr. and Ira L. Hall Jr.; brothers, Horace Carlton Kirby, James Gaston Kirby, and Charles Victor Kirby; and three sisters, Corine Kirby Gaffney, Hazel Kirby Ricard, and Martha Ann Kirby Mason.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 18, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Nunez Baptist Church with Tommy Kirby officiating. Interment followed at New Hope Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday evening, November 17, 2019 between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at Tomlinson Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Lige Moore, Ricky Thompson, Steve Kirby, Todd Hooks, Kevin Gay, and Ricky Hooks. Honorary pallbearers were Courtney Terwilliger, Mike Strowbridge, Emanuel County Fire Service, Emanuel County first responders, and the Swainsboro High School Class of 1949.
Survivors include one son, George W. Canady III (Sheila) of Macon; daughters, Shirley C. White and Eddie, both of Hazlehurst, and Linda C. Snellgrove of Nunez; grandchildren, George W. Canady IV of Phoenix, Arizona, Leslie W. Lytle and Wesley, Hazlehurst, and Matt Snellgrove (LeAnn) and Marc Snellgrove (Buffy), all of Nunez; great-grandchildren, Will Snellgrove, Anna Snellgrove, Avery Snellgrove, Lelah Snellgrove, Mattie Grace Snellgrove, and Emily Gaudry, all of Nunez, and Ella Lytle and Tate Lytle of Hazlehurst; three sisters, Mildred Kirby Davis (Gene) of Thomasville, Alam Lucille “Sunshine” Kirby Mason (Brick) of Santa Rose Beach, Florida, and Helen Kirby English (Ernie) of Townsend; and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by Tomlinson Funeral Home and Crematory of Swainsboro.
