Swainsboro High School’s Class of 1949 and Class of 1950 met at Lynn and Bob’s Restaurant in Swainsboro on October 12, 2019.
As I am endeavoring to write these few words to honor such a special group of people, the tears are already forming in my eyes. This reunion is 69 and 70 years after these dear people have graduated. The only word that comes to mind at this moment is — amazing.
Since my mom, Mildred Usry Thompson (Class of 1950), is the one that coordinates this event, I am privy to recent phone calls made.
I am privy to the fact that one graduate and her husband were so bound and determined to be able to make it to the reunion that he was willing to hire a nurse to come with them so that his wife could meet with her special group of classmates.
I am sad to say that they were not able to make it after all because she was not well enough that morning to attend. One graduate that came had just been hurt badly in an accident, but he pushed through the pain to meet with his classmates. Several drove all the way up from Florida. Who has this kind of commitment anymore Amazing!
This Class of 1949 and Class of 1950 had many heartbreaks since the last reunion in 2018. At least seven of their class members have graduated to their eternal home. Several have dealt with the heartache of their spouse graduating before them to their eternal home. Several have also encountered a loss no parent should ever have to face, their children graduated to their eternal home before they did.
Mom asked at the end of the gathering if everyone wanted to meet again next year, or if they felt like everyone was getting too old for the reunion. Keep in mind, most of these classmates are 86-88 years young. The resounding response was yes! Amazing!
