Gethsemane plans pre-Veterans Day events

For the last four years, Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church has organized a weekend of events preceding Veterans Day. The service and 5K have been successful, and the church is looking to make this year’s even better ahead of Veterans Day 2019, which falls on Monday, November 11.

The fifth annual event, as in the past, will begin with a 5K run/walk on Saturday, November 2, at 9 a.m. The route will begin at Nunez Baptist Church and end at Gethsemane. The fee is $25 per person, which includes an official race t-shirt and a participation medal.

The purpose of the 5K is to give scholarships to students. Last year, the church awarded eight $200 scholarships. This year, the goal is to give away $250 scholarships.

The next day, November 3, will feature a 2 p.m. program to honor veterans and first responders. This service will be held at Gethsemane as well. All attendees are asked to wear or bring their uniforms displaying awards, decorations, and accolades. Dinner will be served afterward.

For more information about either of these services, contact Robert Turner at 478-299-3708.
