The East Georgia State College softball team traveled to Augusta, Ga., on Saturday, September 28, to play against Augusta University.
The first game of the day was a nail-biter, as the Bobcats defeated Augusta by a score of five to four. The Bobcats held off Augusta in the bottom of the 7th inning with Augusta having the bases loaded. As relief, pitcher Payten Strickland gave up no runs and preserved the victory for the Bobcats at five to four. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 5 and 0 in the fall season.
Leading the way for the Bobcats at the plate was Allana Hooks, who went four for four on the day with four singles. Wilkerson, Lee, Morgan, Crews, Sims and Ruffin each had hits in game one for the Bobcats.
In game two, Hooks continued her hitting with a lead-off homerun to give the Bobcats an early one to zero lead. Hooks added two more hits on the day, along with Ruffin adding two more hits. This was not enough, though. The Bobcats fell two to one to Augusta in game two.
Head Coach Chuck Wimberly was most impressed with his freshman pitchers, Strickland and Bussell, who, on the season, have given the Bobcats great innings and showed nerves of steel.
“We are playing with a lot of energy and focus right now,” said Wimberly. “I am so proud of our player’s performances this fall.”
The Bobcats will travel Sunday, October 6, to Newberry College in South Carolina for a double-header.
