Pope awarded Dr. Willie D. Gunn Scholarship to EGSC

William Joseph “Joey” Pope has been awarded the Dr. Willie D. Gunn Leadership Scholarship to East Georgia State College. Joey is the son Terri Moek and Danny Pope of Ailey.
The scholarship endowment honors Dr. Willie D. Gunn, who served as President of East Georgia State College from 1976 – 1993 and as Dean of the College from 1973 – 1976. In addition to his twenty-year association with the College, Dr. Gunn is also an active member in civic and community affairs in Swainsboro and Emanuel County including serving as one of the founders of the Emanuel County Arts Council and the Swainsboro Historical Preservation Society. He is a Combat veteran having served as a Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer in the Reserves for over 36 years. Dr. Gunn was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in the name of the President of the United States.
A 2012 honor graduate of Montgomery County High School, Pope plans to pursue a degree in biology at EGSC and continue after graduation at UGA in physical therapy. At MCHS, he was a member of Beta Club, the baseball team, FCA, the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program, Toombs-Montgomery Youth Leadership Program, and the Red Cross Blood Drive.
“We all know that education is the stepping stone to a better life. East Georgia State College will prepare me for my next step in meeting my life goals. By attending East Georgia, I feel I will be better prepared for university-level work,” commented Pope.
