Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) recently awarded Don Edwards of Garfield two 2004 Angler Awards for reeling in two outstanding catches last year. Edwards caught a 1 lb. 13 oz. hickory shad from the Ogeechee River on March 16, 2004 and a 20 lbs. 4 oz. grass carp from a private pond on Oct. 17, 2004. Edwards reeled in the 18-inch shad using a self-tied shad fly and the 36 1/2 inch carp using a size 12 elk hair caddis. The Angler Award program recognizes those who catch fish that meet or exceed a specific weight for that particular species.
“Presenting angler awards to those who made some great catches last year is a great time to applaud not only the award recipients, but also a wonderful time to recognize the great fishing opportunities available in the state,” says WRD Chief of Fisheries Management Chuck Coomer. “Fishing also is a great way to spend quality time with family and friends, and outdoor recreation activities actually strengthen the family as a unit and children as individuals.”
WRD presents angler award recipients with a certificate signed by WRD Director Dan Forster and an embroidered baseball cap that reads, “Georgia Angler Award 2004” and is customized to include the species and weight of the fish caught by each winner.
