Hands-free law to go in effect Sunday

   At 12 a.m. July 1, Georgia’s new hands-free driving law will go into effect. As its name implies, this law will prohibit motorists from holding or cradling electronic devices such as cell phones or other wireless devices while driving.

Rotary recognizes members, inducts new officers

Grand jury returns 10 true bills

   The April 2018 term of the Emanuel County Grand Jury reconvened Tuesday, June 5, 2018, and considered 10 bills of indictment presented by the district attorney’s office.

   The grand jurors elected Bruce Sutton to serve as foreperson, and Rachael Smisson to serve as clerk.

   During Emanuel County Superior Court’s April 2018 term, the following individuals were sentenced:

   Bill Ricks negotiated a plea of guilty on one count theft by shoplifting. He was sentenced to 10 years probation.

   Arshane Stevenson Austin negotiated a plea of guilty (Alford) on one count possession of illegal weapon, one count simple battery, and one count terrorist threats. He was sentenced to five years probation.

SPD requests public’s assistance with break-in investigation

   On the morning of June 22, 2018, at approximately 5 a.m., officers with Swainsboro Police Department (SPD) responded to Medical Center Pharmacy, located at 132 Victory Drive, in reference to an active alarm.

   Funeral services for Toby Gay Johnson, 64, of Garfield will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Canoochee Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. John David Durden officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.    A memorial service for Martha Poole, 76, of Twin City was held in the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, with Elder Mike Gray officiating.
