The Swainsboro Kiwanis Club met Tuesday, September 17, at Catered Creations at 7 p.m. President Cheryl Goodman presided, and 23 members plus one guest, Rocky Davis, attended.

The program for the evening was hosted by Bobby Seamans, who introduced Davis.

Davis is chief deputy of Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office. He presented a program on crimes and scams that target seniors. He noted the most popular phone scams deal with soliciting money for family members in trouble, false arrest warrants, false claims of winning the lottery and Publisher’s Clearing House contests, being selected as a “secret shopper,” soliciting donations for law enforcement agencies, and Medicare and health insurance focused solicitations for personal information.

Davis also discussed the ease with which scammers obtain information and the use of “spoof” phone numbers. In addition, he encouraged the Kiwanians to be aware of ways to protect themselves in active shooter situations.
