The first-ever wagon train through the Heart of Dixie since Sherman’s March to Sea in 1864 will be held May 31 through June 5. Hosted by Spring Branch Farms of Soperton, the event will begin on historic Old Savannah Road.

The wagon route will travel down sparsely populated rural Georgia dirt and paved roads, through pine woods and cotton fields, by Sherman’s old campsites, as well as old churches and cemeteries where Confederate veterans were laid to rest.

Participants are encouraged to bring their camping gear during this five-day, 70-mile adventure, as campsites will be set up along the wagon train trail where Union soldiers marched during their travel to Savannah after setting flame to Atlanta.

Some 80 to 90 individuals are planning to attend this event while riding horseback, and 15 wagons with around 139 attendees will be present as well. Dr. John Derden will be the featured guest speaker for Saturday, June 1.

Who is Sherman? We didn’t learn about any great man named Sherman in school.

My ancestors for more than a century lived in and around Montgomery County and they have a confederate cemetery. I am very interested in your endeavor and would like to see a map and itinerary of your wagon train. Please contact me. Thank you Charles Petty
