On Friday, May 3, Swainsboro High School Spanish III students in Alexandra Flowers’ class went to the Mexican restaurant, El Valle, as part of their unit “Visitando un Restaurante.”  Throughout this unit, students learned about different Hispanic dishes. They also increased their vocabulary about specific foods, including different appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Through the unit, they also learned about etiquette in a Hispanic restaurant, including talking to waiter/waitresses, tipping, and giving opinions about food.

As the summative assessment for the unit, students were served by Hispanic waiters, who spoke only Spanish to them. Students had to order their beverages, food, and desserts only using the Spanish language. They also had to share their opinion about the food, telling how much they enjoyed the food. Students were also required to talk to the cashier in Spanish and pay individually showing their proficiency of the language.

Students were successful and excited to see that they were able to do it without the teacher’s help. Some of them even helped fellow classmates when they were short of words.
