DBC rep speaks to Garfield Community Club

President Rose Frew called the May 4 meeting of Garfield Community Club to order at 2 p.m. at Lew’s BBQ in Twin City. She introduced speaker Joyce Canady, representative of Durden Banking Company.
Canady spoke to the club about elder abuse. She discussed how telemarketers prey on seniors and how to fend off those scammers. Canady also provided information about Durden Banking Company.
In regard to new business, Magnolia Springs State Park requested that the club furnish information about itself. Also, members talked about the club’s booth at the upcoming Garfield Cookout Festival on May 18. Eileen Dudley, mayor of Twin City, asked if the club would consider giving classes to the community about different life necessities; this request was addressed at the meeting. President Frew also went over the speakers for the rest of the year.
Under old business, members heard about the club’s successful booth at the Spring Fling in Twin City on April 27. President Frew and Sharon Cowart set up the booth; they were aided by George Elder and Luther Bell. Janice Hendley, Judy Phillips, Emily Gaudry, and President Frew tended the booth.
Janice Hendley gave the devotion and prayer. From Settle My Soul, it took scripture from Acts 28:1-2 and was entitled “How to Scatter Unusual Kindness.”
Minutes were presented by Dot Cowart. These were approved at the sound of the gavel.
Sharon Cowart provided the treasurer’s report. This report was accepted as presented.
Phillips gave the correspondence report, which included the sending of cards to Hendley, Charlene Oglesby, President Frew, and Betty Bussiere.
Maudine Johnson led the singing of “God Bless America.”
Maria Woodger read the club objectives, and Sharon Cowart read the club creed, and all recited the club motto.
Lelah Snellgrove was the one visitor.
Joann Trammell, the hostess of the meeting, gave a gift to Canady for taking the time to visit and speak. Sharon Cowart won the door prize.
The club’s next meeting will be held June 6 at 1 p.m. with at Southern Catfish. President Frew will be the host.
