Mr. Walter Hugh Braswell, 81, of Swainsboro passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Serenity Place in Dublin following an extended illness.

Walter Hugh Braswell “Mr. Hugh” was born on January 7, 1938 in Orianna, GA. to the late Donald Braswell and Blanche Avery Braswell. By the time the family made their way to Swainsboro, there were four younger siblings. Hugh attended Swainsboro High School, where he met a young girl who became his sweetheart.

Hugh married his high school sweetheart Camilla Iris Braswell in 1956. She was 16, and he was 18. He soon founded Braswell Brother’s House Moving Company along with his younger brother Ned. The two men became widely known as being the best in the business. “There isn’t anything those two can’t move” became a mantra among those who knew them and knew of them.

As the business began to grow, so did the small family. By 1962 there were three children, one dog, and various cats. It wasn’t long before the family took to the road in a converted school bus, dubbed THE COOL BUS. Practicality every weekend found the Braswell family adventuring somewhere on the road, throughout the South and beyond.

Mr. Hugh’s sense of humor and positive attitude resulted in almost everyone he ever met becoming his friend, hence a friend of the Braswell family. His faith always carried him forward and he never once wavered in this. Through good times and bad, he always kept a positive attitude, yet remained humble and thankful to God for his good fortunes.

This quite, hard-working, humble man led by example and amassed a fantastic collection of friends who all became like family. Hugh and Iris not only raised their three children but helped to raise dozens of others throughout their life together. While Mr. Hugh will be sorely missed, his legacy lives on through all of those whose souls that he and ” Miss Iris” touched. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Walter Lanier Braswell.

Mr. Hugh was a past member of the Lake Luck Civic Club, International Structural Movers Association, Georgia Structural Movers Association, and member of Calvary Methodist Church for over 55 years.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Jackson Braswell of Swainsboro; son, Michael Braswell (Linda) of Swainsboro; daughter, Susan Granich (John) of Milledgeville; brothers, Ned Braswell (Amanda) , Fred Braswell (Peggy), Don Braswell (Loucille) all of Swainsboro; sister, Carol Berry (Jim) of Evans; daughter-in-law, Ginger Braswell of Yemassee, SC; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life Service will be at Calvary United Methodist Church 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2019 with Reverends Nick Hazelton and Mark Miller.

Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Walter Hugh Braswell, 81, of Swainsboro.
