On Thursday, Jan. 31, the Person of the Year, Business of the Year, and STAR students and teachers from area schools were recognized at the 65th annual chamber banquet at the Swainsboro Golf & Country Club.
Shortly after 7 p.m., Ronnie Shuemake received a standing ovation from a crowded room as he humbly accepted the Person of the Year award.
He has spent his life making a difference for others. From serving as a field artillery specialist with the United States Army to retiring from the Georgia State Patrol with more than 30 years of service, this year’s recipient, according to presenter Milton Gray, is a “faithful, selfless servant.” His major contribution at the local level is Future Generation Youth. Fifteen years ago, Shuemake organized the community assistance program and has been distributing book bags packed with school supplies for local children prior to the start of every school year since its inception.
“First of all, I just want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Shuemake said as he accepted his award. He went on to acknowledge his many mentors, some of whom were in the room that evening. “I don’t deserve this, but I thank you for it.”
