Gowen named Hometown Hero at February meeting

Mayor Charles Schwabe and City Council met on Monday, February 4, at 6 p.m. at the City Hall. Calling the meeting to order, Mayor Schwabe welcomed all before Reverend Tim Nary led the prayer of invocation followed by the pledge.

Minutes from the last meeting were motioned for approval by Julian Sconyers and seconded by Johnny Ray Stafford. All voted in favor. John E. Parker made motion to amend the nights agenda, as more items were included since the previous agenda was sent out. Seconding this motion was Rita Faulkner. All voted accordingly.

Before entering into new and old business, Mayor Schwabe called upon Frank Nasworthy for a speech in regards to Our Hometown Hero recipient, Dean Gowen. Gowen received this award due to his selfless actions of assisting with the 2018 plane crash that occurred at Swainsboro Airport. Observing the plane fall while playing golf at Swainsboro’s Country Club, Gowen was first on scene and climbed the fence to help those involved in the fatal crash. Of the two individuals Gowen pulled from the fiery flames, only one survived.
