Recently, one of Vidalia Heritage Academy’s high school scholastic chess teams won the 2019 GICAA High School Chess State Championship. VHA entered two high school chess teams, and both ended up making it to the championship rounds with one team making it to the final round.
Overheard at the tournament was the quip, “I reckon the only things they do in Vidalia are pick onions and play chess!”
Coach Jim Beall, assistant professor of education at East Georgia State College, noted that it was a “sweet victory.”
Team members Devin Burrell and Jackson Williamson were 8-0 while Gaige Brantley was 7-1 and James Hagan was 6-2 in the competition. The middle school team also made it to the quarterfinals, and the elementary school team went five rounds.
“Well played, all!” said Beall.
East Georgia State College supports several chess programs in their region for both public and private schools. For more information, contact Jim Beall at firstname.lastname@example.org.
