The Kiwanis Club of Swainsboro held one of its weekly meetings Tuesday, December 18, at 7 p.m. at Catered Creations.
Twenty-two members were joined by three guests: Mayor Charles Schwabe, Clerk of Superior Court Kristin Hall, and Downtown Development Authority Director Lynn Brinson. President Cheryl Goodman presided.
The program for the evening was hosted by co-chair Ginny Smith, who introduced Brinson. She delivered an update on the status of the Dixie Theatre renovation. Thanks to a $62,000 grant, the exterior has been renovated, but funding is needed to complete the interior.
Built in 1934, the theatre has not had a facelift since 1951 and closed in the late 70s. Along with bringing back 1970s prices for first-run movies, the new theatre will be able to hold cultural events and provide a place for local school children to have a place to go on cultural field trips, according to Brinson’s report. She also advised that an art gallery is planned as part of the project in connection with the Emanuel Arts Council.
