Ware’s Bar-B-Q honored as DDA MVP

The Downtown Development Authority of Swainsboro (DDA) recently presented Ware’s Bar-B-Q with its quarterly Most Valuable Partner (MVP) Award. The award recognizes businesses that go above and beyond in supporting the downtown Swainsboro community and the DDA’s downtown revitalization efforts.
Ware’s Bar-B-Q has been a staple in Swainsboro since 1958 when brothers J.C. “Buck” and Dudley Ware joined forces to operate a barbecue restaurant and canning plant. Previously, Buck operated a meat market in Ed Breedlove’s grocery store on West Moring Street while Dudley ran a barbecue and Brunswick stew canning operation on North Main Street.
The brothers soon came together in the North Main Street location, opening the restaurant in the front portion of the building with the rear portion housing the canning plant. After a few years, the restaurant expanded into its own space on North Main Street, where many remember having their first taste of Ware’s legendary barbecue.
As youngsters, brothers Joe and Johnny Ware grew up working in the canning plant and restaurant. After their father, Buck’s, passing in 1973, they assumed operation of the canning plant when Dudley took over the restaurant.
