Inspirational speaker Hashim Garrett spoke to the student body of Swainsboro High School (SHS) on Monday, November 26. Garrett is a former gang member who was shot and paralyzed from the waist down at age 15. He  shared his experiences with violence, conflict, overcoming tragedy, forgiveness, choices, and positive transformation.

Garrett has lead an active life of remarkable achievements despite his ordeal as a teen and subsequent paralysis.  Originally from Brooklyn, New York, he majored in investment banking at Rutgers University and has served as violence prevention coordinator at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, an acute care hospital in New Jersey, where he worked with children about the causes of conflicts. Today, he is married with two children and works with a variety of organizations providing lectures and presentations.
