As part of the University System of Georgia’s (USG) increased focus on the importance of information security within the USG and as a requirement of institutions in the USG, each institution must have in place an Information Security Officer (ISO) who will be responsible for establishing, maintaining and reporting on information security roles, responsibilities, policies, standards and procedures. The ISO’s primary roles are to ensure an institution’s information and IT systems are secure and privacy is protected. To this end, East Georgia State College recently named Ashley Woods as Information Security Officer for the college.
Woods joined EGSC in March of 2008 as a Network and IT Security Specialist, managing and troubleshooting the campus network, developing continuity of operations, disaster recovery and incident response plans, managing campus web filters, spam filters and bandwidth shapers to secure users and preserve data integrity, and more. He also worked to complete annual cybersecurity reports for the USG and reviewed them to recognize deficiencies and risks, and improve upon them. Woods earned his Associate of Arts summa cum laude from East Georgia State College in May 2017, and is currently working on his WebBSIT from Georgia Southern University. He also completed the Computer Information Systems – Networking program at Swainsboro Technical College, now Southeastern Technical College, in May of 2001.
“Given the ever-changing information security environment, it’s critical for an organization to place a priority on ensuring its information technology (IT) systems and data are protected and secure,” said EGSC’s Vice President of Information Technology, Mike Rountree. “With that in mind, and given Ashley’s extensive IT / information security experience, training and certifications, EGSC is very fortunate to have him as the college’s Information Security Officer.”
