The Swainsboro Tigers softball team turned in an impressive opening week, winning three of their first four games, including two games in Harlem on Saturday to give this young squad a lot of positive energy and confidence to kick off their 2018 campaign.
The Tigers got the season off with a bang with a home win against Portal, 6-4. Unfortunately, their only loss thus far was the lone region game against Metter on the following day, 11-6.
Swainsboro traveled last weekend to play in the Harlem tournament and went undefeated, winning twice. The offense ignited, hammering Westside 16-2 and cruising against New Hampstead 10-3.
“I have been very pleased with our hitting,” said head coach Rusty Brown. “Team batting is .343 after 4 games and we’ve hit 14 doubles. Defensively still need some work but overall the effort has been good and the pitching has been solid. We are still thin with the injuries but have had some girls step up and fill some of those spots. Hopefully these girls gain some momentum as we head into a much tougher schedule in region 2AA.”
Swainsboro played at Toombs County and Burke County on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tigers will host St. Vincent’s on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for the second region game.
