The Rotary Club of Swainsboro held its August 6, 2018 meeting at Catered Creations in Swainsboro. Cason DeVane welcomed everyone to the meeting. Tobe Karrh provided the invocation and led the pledge, and Rotary Four-Way Test.  DeVane reminded everyone about the Rotary District Governor’s upcoming visit to Swainsboro on August 27. He also reported Rotary Board decisions to the group before turning the program over to Steven Rigdon.

Rigdon’s topic was on the growing problem of Identity Theft. Steven provided a handout outlining the important steps to do right away in the event of fraud as well as steps to do next.

  • Step 1: Call the companies where you know fraud occurred.
  • Step 2: Place a fraud alert and get your credit reports by calling one of the three credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax.
  • Step 3: Report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338

You may also choose to file a report with your local police department.

Steps to do next include: close new accounts opened in your name; remove bogus charges from your accounts; and document the theft by creating an Identity Theft Report as stated in Step 3 to correct your credit report; and consider adding an extended fraud alert or credit freeze.
