EGSC welcomes Dr. Upchurch as director of nursing

   East Georgia State College recently welcomed its new Director of Nursing, Dr. Linda Upchurch. Dr. Upchurch joins EGSC from Ogeechee Area Hospice, where she served as executive director and CEO. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia Southern University, then went on to earn her Master of Science in Nursing – Adult Nurse Practitioner/Palliative Care Focus from Vanderbilt School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee. She returned to Georgia Southern University to earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice. Dr. Upchurch has more than a decade of experience as a nursing educator at the baccalaureate, master’s and DNP levels. Her professional nursing career includes a background in intensive care, telemetry, geriatrics, community home health hospice and end-of-life.

   Dr. Upchurch has worked as an adult nurse practitioner and a registered nurse in several area clinical facilities, and was an Assistant Professor, Instructor, and guest lecturer for several courses at Georgia Southern. She has published articles in professional journals such as Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing and American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and has published numerous book chapters and study modules. Dr. Upchurch is also currently working on two research projects dealing with high-fidelity simulation in end-of-life care. She continues to attend professional development and continuing education opportunities to keep up with trends in healthcare and to hone her skills.

   The EGSC School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is proud to announce and welcome Dr. Linda Upchurch to the East Georgia State College team,” said Dean of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dr. Jimmy Wedincamp. “Dr. Upchurch has enjoyed a tremendous career and has a wealth of clinical practice experience and a decade of nursing education experience in the School of Nursing at Georgia Southern University. We look forward to Dr. Upchurch’s visionary guidance for the continued success and growth of our nursing program.”

   Dr. Upchurch and her husband, Dr. Thomas Upchurch (Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at EGSC’s Statesboro Campus) live in Statesboro. She is very devoted to her family and loves to sing and jog.
