East Georgia State College’s Department of Biology was recently named one of INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine’s 2018 Inspiring Programs in STEM. INSIGHT Into Diversity is the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. This award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). East Georgia State College will be featured, along with 77 other recipients, in the September 2018 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research and successful programs and initiatives.
“The EGSC Department of Biology is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive climate for all students and this award confirms that EGSC continually strives to recruit, educate, and retain underrepresented minority students,” said EGSC Dean of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dr. Jimmy Wedincamp. “Congratulations to the faculty and staff of the Biology Department for their dedication in assisting underrepresented populations. This is a well-deserved honor.”
Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Deborah Vess, agreed, stating, “EGSC is very proud of the work being done through our biology program to further the academic and professional careers of underrepresented students. The program’s undergraduate research requirements and hands-on work within the beautiful hardwood forests that surround the main campus provide a rigorous, and engaging, and life changing academic experience. This program has grown rapidly and promotes student success through its use of high impact practices, effective mentoring, and learner-centered pedagogies. The program exemplifies EGSC’s overall commitment to student success.”
“We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students,” said Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond.”
EGSC’s Chair of the Department of Biology, Dr. David Chevalier, said, “This award recognized the successful, coordinated efforts from EGSC Biology faculty and enrollment management staff in the past two years to increase the recruitment, enrollment and graduation of students from underrepresented groups, specifically women, enrolled in the Bachelor of Sciences in Biology program. We are already planning new strategies to further increase the academic success of these students in the future.”
A call for nominations for this award was announced in April 2018.
