On Friday, July 6, around 1:45 p.m., 911 dispatchers received numerous calls reporting a rollover crash on I-16 Westbound by mile marker 87. Additional callers advised the vehicle had gone over the bridge railing.
First arriving deputies found the white Ford Expedition containing a family of five on its roof lying across the railroad tracks. Rescuers used various tools to extricate the trapped victims in the sweltering heat and humidity. Two of the victims were airlifted to a trauma center in Macon, and the remaining three were transported to Emanuel Medical Center. Airlifted out by Air Evac were female passenger Juana Perez, 35, and a 12-year old male minor. Lazaro Martinez, 35-year-old male, and two female minors of the ages 9 and 15 were transported by EMS to Emanuel Medical Center.
It is believed that a rear tire failure caused the vehicle to go out of control. Due to this crash, traffic on both sides of I-16 was backed up for quite a time.
Responding to scene were Emanuel County EMS, Emanuel County sheriff’s deputies, Oak Park fire and police, Swainsboro Fire and Rescue, and mutual aid from Metter Fire Heavy Rescue. Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 19 investigated the crash.
