The Swainsboro Exchange Club held its annual officer installation and ladies night on Tuesday, June 19, at The Cadle Barn. The meal for the evening was provided by Catered Creations, and entertainment was Percy Peabody, local comedian from Metter. New member chairman Don Wilkes pinned new members who were present, and Shot Strange welcomed ladies and also performed the swearing in of the new officers.

The Exchangite of the Year, Josh Hunnicut Award, was presented to Gary Mason, who currently serves as club secretary. The presentation is normally handled by the previous year’s recipient, but because Jerry Cadle could not attend, Scott Cochran stepped in to announce the club’s choice.

“It is my privilege to present this year’s honor to Gary Mason. Gary does the hardest job in the club and the one that gets the least amount of recognition.” Cochran added, “Gary is always willing to step up and do whatever is asked of him.”

Upon accepting the award, Mason said, “I was challenged by the older members in the club when I joined to ‘make a difference’ and not just be someone who came to the meeting and ate the meal. It’s been my honor and privilege to hold just about every office in this club, and I’m proud to say that I’ve always tried to do my best to further the aims and goals of the Swainsboro Exchange Club.”  Mason added, “It’s a real blessing to have my mother here with me as I receive this award. Her and my father taught me that it’s your duty to give back to the community, and I’ve tried to live up to that example.”

Bill Rogers Jr. gave a short but stirring memoriam for deceased members Sonny Stephens and Tommy Purvis. Family members of both these dearly beloved members were invited as honored guests.

Incoming president and local business owner Dr. Mark Haddock closed the meeting with his remarks. “I’m looking forward to another productive year in the Swainsboro Exchange Club and with your help, I’m sure we can continue the growth of the club.”

The Swainsboro Exchange Club meets each Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Catered Creations on Green Street. All local business owners and community-minded individuals are invited to attend.
