East Georgia State College recently earned the Joseph M. White Award from the Georgia Association of Physical Plant Administrators. The award is a $1,000 grant presented to a member institution’s Facilities Department to be used at the discretion of that department’s management.
EGSC Director of Plant Operations David Steptoe says he plans to use the grant to fund several Lunch and Learn series, as well as staff safety training.
White began his career in higher education as the Resident Engineer Inspector for Macon Junior College in 1967. In 1968, he became the college’s first Director of Plant Operations and remained in that position until his retirement in 1997 from what had then become Macon State College. White was a charter member of GAPPA in 1982 and the first GAPPA Treasurer. He served in this office for over 20 years. As one of the founding members of GAPPA, he was instrumental in building the organization into the vibrant developmental resource for educational facilities professionals in Georgia. Even after his retirement in 1997, both he and his wife, Katherine, continued to actively support the association to insure its continuous growth and provide critical training opportunities for its members. White passed away in May of 2010 and is greatly missed and fondly remembered for his enormous contributions to GAPPA and its mission.
GAPPA was formed for the purpose of strengthening professionalism among Physical Plant Administrators by promoting the common interest of construction, care and operation of Physical Plants used by universities and colleges in Georgia; fostering professionalism among persons engaged in this work; providing information services, programs and activities to its members; and representing the interest of its members of the Higher Education Community and other groups.
“Being randomly selected for this award at the annual meeting in May was exciting!” said Michelle Goff, Director of EGSC Business Operations and GAPPA Board Scholarship Chair. “Budget funds are never available for staff development and training, so this award will go far in conducting very important safety training as well as vendor lunch and learn opportunities for the hard working staff at Plant Operations. These folks are the backbone of the College—men and women who show up every day to serve others—and I’m pleased that we can expose them to training and learning opportunities that are not possible without grant awards such as this.”
