The Rotary Club of Swainsboro held its June 11, 2018 meeting at Catered Creations in Swainsboro.  Al Lawson welcomed everyone and called the last meeting of the fiscal year to order. Craig McNeely gave the invocation and Wayne Greenway led the pledge, and Rotary Four-Way Test.

Richard McNeely recognized fellow Metter Club Rotarian, G.W. Johnson. Lawson reported a donation as well as actions of the Board.  The slate of officers for the new fiscal year was unanimously approved.  Officers include the following:  Cason DeVane, president; Kristin Hall, president-elect; John Allen Bailey, secretary; Wade John, treasurer.  Board of Directors include the following: Greg Johnson, Gail Ware, Vernon Hardy, and Dori Johnson.

Rotarian Greg Johnson introduced the speaker for the day, Dr. Bill Perry. Dr. Perry has been a Rotarian in Statesboro for 36 years.  Dr. Perry provided inspiration on “How to Judge Greatness.” A trait of greatness is helping the little people who are of course the children, but also those people who can not do anything for us in return.  A measure of greatness is helping the weak. Perry told the Rotarians to elevate and motivate the weak.

Dr. Perry shared with the group about a man who had influenced his life through his books, Dr. Howard Thurman who was an African-American author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader dedicated one of his books to an anonymous stranger who gave him money to check his trunk on a train to Jacksonville, Florida so that he could finish school.  The stranger helped the weak. Dr. Perry related the helping of the weak to the Rotarian motto, “Service Above Self” and the “Rotarian Four-Way Test.”

The Rotary Club of Swainsboro is a unit of Rotary International and a member of District #6920.
