SHS Tigers battle West Laurens in spring football

The Swainsboro Tigers played their spring football game this past Friday, making the short trip to West Laurens to play the Raiders. West Laurens led 10-0 early and held on for a 17-14 win as both varsity teams played for three quarters and the JV teams took over for the final period.
After 10 official practices, dodging rain, lightening, and battling a multitude of injuries, Swainsboro was ready to tee it up and get a sneak peak of what the 2018 football season could look like. The Raiders are a AAAA school coming off of a second round playoff appearance and dominated the line of scrimmage early, keeping the Tigers in check for their first four possessions. The Raiders scored with 3:04 to go in the opening quarter with a 17-yard run to grab a 7-0 lead. West Laurens increased their lead to 10-0 on a 47-yard field goal late in the opening quarter.
The Tigers struggled to open holes and get any push with the offensive lines, short circuiting their typically dangerous running game as Trez Stephens searched for space to get loose. Swainsboro got it going through the air in the second quarter as QB Kade Youmans found RJ Phillips across the middle and Phillips ran through a pair of would-be tacklers for a 48-yard TD. Cole Bell tacked on the extra point to cut the lead to 10-7.
