Three members of the Brier Creek and Wiregrass Chapters of the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution traveled 153 miles to attend a Patriots Day ceremony held April 14. This event—which celebrated the Frederica naval action that took place on April 19, 1779—was held on St. Simons Island. Those attending were the Brier Creek Chapter’s sergeant-at-arms, Don Bazemore, Wiregrass Chapter vice president Steve Burke, Wiregrass Chapter registrar Dess Smith III.
Both Bazemore and Smith presented their chapters’ wreaths during the ceremony. All three compatriots participated in the award-winning Georgia SAR color guard’s presentation and retiring of colors. Bazemore and Smith were also part of a Pennsylvania long rifle 3-round volley salute, and Burke fired his 6-pound naval cannon in a 3-round cannon volley.
During the ceremony, there were 67 different organizations that presented wreaths. After the ceremony, the annual Parade of Patriots departed from the St. Simons lighthouse to the pier downtown, then returned to the lighthouse.
