A motorist driving on Highway 80 East discovered a house fire on Saturday evening, May 5. The thick, smoky blaze damaged the home at 3506 Highway 80 East. Twin City firefighters were assisted by Canoochee, Metter and Swainsboro Fire Departments. An occupant of the structure was treated for smoke inhalation by Emanuel EMS. Twin City Police and Emanuel County sheriff’s units assisted at the scene.
Later that evening, Swainsboro Engine 200 extinguished a brush fire along Highway 80 East in the area of Sweet Tea Grille.
On Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m., Swainsboro Engine 200 and Support 2 fought a large brush fire on Highway 80 East.
As this was occurring, Swainsboro Engine 6 extinguished a shed fire at 214 Atkinson Drive. Careless disposal of smoking materials is believed to have caused this fire by igniting pine straw.
Shortly after 6 p.m., the occupants of a Dodge pickup truck headed north on Highway U.S. 1 noticed the oil light come on and the engine stall. As they coasted to a stop, smoke was coming from under the hood. When they opened the hood, the fire erupted and totally engulfed the vehicle. Fire units from Nunez, Oak Park and Swainsboro fought the blaze while sheriff’s deputies controlled traffic on the busy highway.
