Swainsboro Police investigate commercial gambling at local business

On the evening of Friday, Jan. 19, the Swainsboro Police Department personnel executed a search warrant on a East Main business known as Sunoco. The warrant came as a result of a three-month investigation involving the use of electronic gaming machines in violation of state gambling laws. Upon arrival to the scene, officers secured the premises and conducted a thorough search of the business for evidence related to the crime of commercial gambling. The execution of the search warrant substantiated previously gained evidence of the criminal investigation that the target establishment was being using in violation of the law.
Arrested at the time of arrival on three counts of Commercial Gambling and two counts of Sexual Battery, was the operator of the store Mr. Suryakant Dehyabhai Patel, of a Swainsboro address.
Officers confiscated mechanical devices used to conduct criminal activity, along with other evidence necessary for a successful criminal prosecution. At the conclusion of the search, the establishment was released to the business owner.
This investigation began as a result of citizens filing complaints of gambling activity with the police department, as well as complaints being made to other public officials of criminal activity at the business establishment. The Swainsboro Police Department Criminal Investigation Division, as a result of these complaints, ignited an investigation leading to facts confirming commercial gambling activity at the business.
The case remains under investigation by the Swainsboro Police Department. It is likely, as the investigation continues, that other arrest my be forth coming.
