Georgia’s Manufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) is approaching, and Southeastern Technical College is inviting area schools to take part in the celebration’s Student Design Competition.

MAW, developed by the Technical College System of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, is an annual event recognizing the contribution of manufacturing to Georgia’s economy. The Student Design Competition involves K-12 students in this celebration, asking them to illustrate the importance of manufacturing through art.

“The Student Design Competition teaches children and teens about manufacturing by asking them to examine and then depict the importance of manufacturing in their lives and communities,” said Krysta Rushing, STC’s director of marketing and public relations.

There are three levels of competition divided by grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The content of the art is open to each participant’s interpretation of manufacturing in Georgia, but physically, the artwork must be 11 inches by 17 inches, landscape, and flat, with no 3D objects attached to the piece.

The first, second and third place designs at the state level will receive $500, $300, and $100, respectively. Additionally, the winner from each category will have their work displayed at the Governor’s Awards Luncheon on April 12 in Atlanta.

Southeastern Tech will be holding its own MAW design contest as well. Each piece submitted for the state competition is eligible for STC’s contest and will be judged using the state criteria, resulting in prizes of $75, $50, and $25 for first, second, and third place, respectively. Every submission to STC will be submitted to the state competition.

The deadline to submit entries to STC is January 23, so the school is asking that students and schools get their submissions in soon. For more information on how to submit, call 912-538-3157 or email
