Funeral services for Jessie R. “Sonny” Morgan Jr., 81, of Metter were held at Metter Primitive Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, with Elders Richard Davis and Mike Newman officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Aline. He passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, at Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Jessie R. “Sonny” Morgan Jr. was born March 1, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Jessie R. Morgan, Sr. and Edith Tansley Morgan. After graduating high school, he attended spring training in Auburndale, Fla., but shortly after, he realized his love for baseball wasn’t as strong as his love for his best friend, Mary “Pup” Sutton, who he married, and she blessed him with three children. Morgan lived most of his life in Candler County, where he was a county commissioner for 32 years. He also drove buses No. 166 and No. 79 for 35 years with Chandler County Board of Education, where his passion was driving the Metter football team. He was a farmer for many years; he loved taking care of his farm and his animals. Morgan was a member of Metter Lions Club and Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church of Aline. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Mary F. “Pup” Morgan of Metter; son, Sonny (Barbie) Morgan of Swainsboro; daughters, Phyllis (James E.) Anderson of Reidsville and Penny Morgan of Metter; grandchildren, Kelci Marie Anderson, Agie Elizabeth Anderson, Ben (Ariel) Anderson, Allie Elaine Anderson, Jesse “Jess” R. Morgan IV, Blythe “Sunni” Morgan, and Dawda Njie Morgan; great-granddaughter, Macie Elaine Anderson; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Pallbearers were Dawda Njie Morgan, Garrett Wilcox, Vernon Ownbey, Rodney Lee, Eddie Williams, Benjamin Brock, and Sutton Kemp. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Metter Lions Club, Steve Williams, and Solomon Clay.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Special Olympics, 6046 Financial Dr., Norcross, Ga., 30071.
Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
