The Rotary Club of Swainsboro held its January 8, 2018 meeting at Catered Creations in Swainsboro. Al Lawson welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. Members joined hearts in prayer, pledged allegiance to the flag, and recited the Rotary Four-Way Test. Rotarian Chuck Wofford was in charge of the program and introduced Erma Jenkins, retired Emanuel County Systems School superintendent/educator.
Erma Jenkins is passionate about the American Cancer Society and believes in the race for a cure of this devastating disease. Jenkins is committed to helping cancer patients and their caregivers through efforts such as Relay for Life. Jenkins shared the following facts from the American Cancer Society. $4.6 billion were invested in research since 1996. More than 16.5 million cancer survivors are alive in the U. S. today thanks to past Relay for Life efforts. 4.5 million free nights of lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers who traveled for treatment since 1984. 7.6 Million free rides to treatment were given to cancer patients since 2005.
Emanuel County Relay for Life’s theme is “United We Stand to Fight for a Cure”. Co-Chairs, Sara Young, and Pam Redding are asking the community to continue supporting the efforts of the American Cancer Society. Upcoming activities include the Relay Beauty Pageant-Feb. 10, 2018 and Relay 5K on April 7, 2018. Information about the Cancer Survivor’s Dinner will be coming soon.
The Rotary Cub of Swainsboro is a unit of Rotary International and a member of District #6920. Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever. The six areas of focus include: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies. The Rotary Club of Swainsboro encourages everyone to support the Emanuel County Relay for Life and help us fight this terrible disease.
