First appearance hearing held in Emanuel County for Washington County deputies involved in taser death

   Three former deputies of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office have been jailed after being accused of tasing a Milledgeville man to death.

   On Wednesday, Dec. 20, a preliminary hearing was held for Michael Howell, Rhett Scott, and Henry Copeland. For the convenience of the court, the three defendants reported to the Emanuel County Courthouse, as The Honorable Judge Kathy S. Palmer was on the bench to preside over Emanuel County Superior Court.

   Following indictment by the Washington County Grand Jury on Tuesday, Dec. 19, bench warrants were issued, and the ex-deputies turned themselves in Wednesday morning. They are facing two counts felony murder, as well as false imprisonment, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless conduct, and two counts involuntary manslaughter.
