Sam Purvis Jr., 81

   Funeral services for Sam Purvis Jr., 81, of Wadley were held in the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, with Reverend Joe Bedgood officiating. Interment followed in the Rich Family Cemetery. He passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Sam Purvis Jr. was born August 18, 1936, in Wadley to the late Sam Clark Purvis Sr. and Bonnie Warren Stewart Purvis. He loved racing and fishing, and he was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin Purvis, Clark Purvis, and Tanny Purvis; sister, Faye Gains; and daughter, Janet Slusher.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Abney Purvis of Wadley; son, Paul (Debra) Purvis of Wadley; daughter, Debra (Greg) Barber of East Dublin; brothers, Billy Purvis of Wadley and Thomas (Patricia) Purvis of Milledgeville; sister, Willie Julie Tapley of Wrightsville; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pallbearers were Lenny Hobbs, Billy Cavannah, Kirtus Smith, Shawn Wombles, Chris McCullars, and Steve Howell.

Honorary pallbearers were Clark Garnto, Larry Womack, and Junior Brinson, and Mark Smith.

Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
