Graveside memorial services for Ruth “Ruthie” Lumpkin Simpson, 88, of South Carolina will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, M.D. in October. She passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Mrs. Ruth Lumpkin Simpson was born in Atlanta to the late William and Eugenia Ingram Lumpkin. She attended Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., where she met her future husband Dr. Robert “Bob” Simpson. While married and raising a family, Simpson began her teaching career that spanned five decades. In the 1960’s, she went back to school and achieved a 6th-year-degree in Education in Reading from West Georgia College (1970). Ruthie and Bob moved to Swainsboro in 1973. During her time in Emanuel County, Ruthie taught reading to elementary and high school grade students. She also traveled around the state of Georgia, training teachers to teach reading until retiring in 1987. Upon entering retirement, Simpson also lost her husband. She continued sharing her love of teaching by volunteering at East Georgia Community College, currently known as East Georgia State College (ECSC), writing lab. in 2003, Simpson finally fully retired and moved to Charleston, S.C. to be closer to family. She enjoyed doing needlework and bridge, her pets, and was a member of the Garden Club, but was happiest when entertaining friends. Simpson was proceeded in death by her husband, a charter faculty member of East Georgia State College.
Survivors include four children, Eric Simpson of Washington D.C.; Jennifer Palmer of Bellevue, C.O.; Douglas Simpson of Houston, T.X.; and Shelley Elliott of Mt. Pleasant, S.C; and three grandchildren, Christopher Simpson, Stephanie Simpson, and Robert Elliott.
