Funeral services for Louie Elton Rowland, 95, of Kite were held Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Kite First Baptist Church with Reverend Burton Dixon officiating. Interment followed in the Kite City Cemetery. He passed away at his home on September 27, 2017.
Mr. Louie Elton Rowland was a lifelong resident of Johnson County. He was born on September 5, 1922, to John Clifton Rowland and Ideen Webb Rowland. He was a member of Kite First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School superintendent for many years. Rowland was a World War II veteran, serving in the European Theatre. He received a Purple Heart, as well as many other distinguished medals. Rowland was retired from the Savannah River Plant and farmed throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Johnnie Rowland and Mary Frances Cartwright, and brothers Robert (Bud) Rowland, Sheldon Rowland, Fred Rowland, and Herbert Rowland.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Geneva Kight Rowland; daughter, Sandra (David) Fields; grandchildren, Teri (Michael) Aldrich of Metter and Chris (Cori) Fields of Wrightsville; great-grandchildren, Hunter (Emily) Aldrich, Nick Lawhorn, Lane Aldrich, Ethan Fields, Nathaniel Fields, and Lucas Fields; sisters, Genell Rowland Mathis of Columbus and Sara Rowland (Lewis) Watkins of Appling; brothers, Henry (Cuba) Rowland of New Ellenton, S.C. and Will Rowland of Millen; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Pallbearers were nephews, Bill Cartwright, Charles Cartwright, Tony Mathis, Craig Rowland, Glen Rowland, Brad Rowland, and Steve Rowland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kite First Baptist Church P.O. Box 65, Kite, GA, 31049.
Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
