On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, seven East Georgia State College students attended the 12th Annual Southern Collegiate Leadership Conference at Georgia Southern University. The students, accompanied by EGSC Student Life Director Vicki Sherrod, attended workshops and breakout sessions designed to develop leadership skills.

The group also heard from Keynote Speaker and workshop presenter Dr. Josie Ahlquist, who spoke on the intersection of student leadership and social media. Dr. Ahlquist is an international independent speaker, author and coach on digital leadership and holds a role at Florida State University as a research associate and online leadership instructor.

Attending were EGSC Student Ambassadors Mohmedyamin Chhipa of Wrighstville, Madison Wimberly of Swainsboro, Brittany Hatcher, Rebecca Hill and Meghan Canady of Twin City; along with Ambassadors and Student Government Association Representatives Kandanasia McNeal of Claxton and Brianna Clay of Swainsboro.

Canady said, “I learned that a leader is a person who knows the way, shows the way, and inspires others towards the right path of success.”

“Leadership isn’t just about being a leader to some,” added Hill. “It’s about listening and making decisions for the greater good of who you’re leading.”
