Retirement on a positive note

Joan Bishop Funderburk, a native of Emanuel County, was born in Summertown and raised in Midville. She thinks Emanuel County is a good place to retire, as she has resided here for the past 81 years.
Like all places, Emanuel County has its pros and cons. Funderburk thinks Emanuel County needs more industries so traveling will not be necessary. She currently enjoys doing her shopping in Statesboro.
She has three children and was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child was in the third grade. By the age of 16, Funderburk was happily married and began to focus her attention toward a family of her own.
When she was around the age of 35, she received her GED and gained some college credits by enrolling in college courses. She later began working as a teacher’s aid, now referred to as paraprofessionals. When asked what her favorite part was about being a teacher’s aid, her response was “bringing a child that is very shy to his [or her] full potential.”…
