This man is known for his great coaching abilities, his ferocious scowl and strong lungs. He yelled often, smirked some and smiled occasionally. But the girls loved him for it and he usually got the reaction he wanted when he yelled. This man is the one and only Coach Harper.

When this story printed in 1972 Coach Harper had been at SHS for 10 years coaching girls basketball. He racked up an impressive record with four sub-regional titles and two region championships at this time.

Formally a varsity football line coach at SHS, at this time he was assisting Coach James White with B team football. Before coming to Swainsboro, he coached junior high football and girls basketball in Jesup Ga, for two years. A native of Jesup, Harper is married to Lois Parker of Sylvania, who kept score and followed the team to every game.

Here are a few photo’s captured during a basketball ball game in 1972. I hope you enjoy them and I hope you remember Coach Jimmy Harper.
