Samuel Clemens was born on this day in 1835. Samuel is better known as Mark Twain. He received his pilot’s license in 1859, when he was only 23 years old. Samuel piloted boats for two years. During his time as a pilot, he picked of the term ” Mark Twain”, a boatmans’s call noting that the river was only two fathoms deep, the minimum depth for safe navigation.

Clemens moved to San Francisco in 1864 where he worked as reporter. There, he wrote the story that made him famous: The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He continued to use the pseudonym for nearly 50 years, Mark Twain.
