Annual canning contest announced

It is time, once again, to recognize the great cooks and “home canners” in our area. If you have canned produce such as pickles, tomatoes, jellies and other items, please bring them to the Jaycee Fairgrounds Sunday, Oct. 9 between 2 and 4 p.m. No exhibits will be accepted on Saturday or after 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Please bring canning jars with completed entry forms. These forms, along with contest rules, can be picked up from the Farm Bureau office, located at 320 Lambs Bridge road in Swainsboro. Emanuel County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee will be on hand to assist you in checking in your jars.
Entries must meet USDA recommendations for home canning:
• All entries must be in half-pint, pint, or quart standard canning jar with new lids.
• Entries must be canned within the last 12 months.
• Only one jar per exhibitors per category will be judged.
• The exhibitor’s name and phone number must be on the bottom of each jar, and each entry must be labeled with name of the item, the date of canning, and the processing method.
There will be two classes for judging – adult and youth (grades kindergarten through 12).
Entry forms must be completed before bringing your items on Sunday.
Judging will be held Monday, Oct. 10. Prize money and ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places. A grand champion will be awarded in each class as well. Gather your jars and come out on October 9. There is always a good turnout, and each year yields beautiful entries!
