Sheriff’s Office and GBI investigate after early morning shooting leaves one dead, another injured

On Monday, July 11, 2016, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Services were called to respond to a residence on King Circle Drive in Emanuel County in reference to a shooting that had just occurred at the home. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with two victims at the home suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victims, identified as Kenneth Gillis, 48, and Angela Gillis, 40, were both transported from the home by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Angela Gillis was pronounced as deceased due to her injuries. Kenneth Gillis was flown to Augusta for treatment of his injuries. He is currently listed in stable condition.
According to Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens, investigation into the matter thus far has revealed that a suspect or suspects fired a number of rounds into the residence from the roadway, with a concentration of the shots being directed toward the master bedroom of the residence. A number of the bullets penetrated the window and wall of the residence, striking the victims.
The Sheriff’s Office has requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and its Crime Scene Unit for this case. The Sheriff further stated that based on evidence gathered so far in the case, he does not consider this to be a random shooting.
